CHEMICAL PEELING

Chemical peeling is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by removing its outermost layers. The procedure involves applying chemical solutions to the skin, which provoke controlled exfoliation and renewal. Primarily, chemical peeling targets issues such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne, scars, and general skin aging.

Types of Chemical Peeling According to Depth of Action

  1. Superficial Chemical Peeling:

    • Description: This is the mildest form of peeling, removing only the outermost layer of the skin (the epidermis).
    • Active Ingredients: Commonly includes glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or other AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids).
    • Indications: Smooths skin texture, minimizes fine lines, treats acne and hyperpigmentation.
    • Procedure and Recovery: Minimal recovery time – from a few hours to a day. Suitable for frequent use, e.g., every 2–4 weeks.
    • Effect: Refreshes the skin and lightly brightens pigmentation.
  2. Medium Depth Chemical Peeling:

    • Description: Removes the epidermis and part of the dermis (the middle layer of the skin).
    • Active Ingredients: Typically includes trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or higher concentrations of AHA.
    • Indications: Treats deeper wrinkles, acne scars, and more pronounced hyperpigmentation.
    • Procedure and Recovery: Recovery may take 5–7 days, during which the skin peels and requires special care.
    • Effect: Visible improvement in skin texture and tone, more pronounced treatment of pigmented spots and scars.
  3. Deep Chemical Peeling:

    • Description: Penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin, affecting the entire dermis.
    • Active Ingredients: Most commonly uses phenolic acid or high concentrations of trichloroacetic acid.
    • Indications: Deep wrinkles, serious sun damage, significant scars, or skin issues.
    • Procedure and Recovery: Requires extended recovery time – up to several weeks. Often performed under anesthesia or with sedatives.
    • Effect: Long-lasting results with skin smoothing and significant improvement of severe skin problems.

Benefits of Chemical Peeling:

  • Improves skin texture and tone.
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Lightens pigmented spots.
  • Decreases acne scars and stretch marks.
  • Stimulates collagen production.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Redness, irritation, and peeling of the skin post-procedure.
  • For deeper peels, there is a risk of infections, pigmentation changes, and scarring.
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight.

Preparation and Aftercare:

  • Avoid sun exposure before and after the procedure, as the skin is more sensitive to UV rays.
  • Apply high SPF sunscreen products.
  • Follow recommended skincare guidelines from a specialist, including hydration and avoidance of aggressive cosmetic products.

Are All Suitable for Chemical Peeling?

Not all skin types and conditions are suitable for chemical peeling. Individuals with very sensitive skin, active infections (e.g., herpes), or pregnant women may require special consultation before opting for this method.

Chemical peeling is a powerful tool for skin rejuvenation but requires proper preparation and professional assessment for optimal results.
